Nebraska football will hold its ninth and final camp of June this evening with what it's dubbing the Thursday Night Throwdown.

But before the Throwdown takes place, a two-hour post-grad camp took center stage in Lincoln.

Recent postgrad camps have brought prospects to Lincoln who performed well enough for Nebraska to add them to the roster, like quarterbacks Jalyn Gramstad and Luke Longval, EDGE James Williams and receiver Hayes Miller.

Gramstad, the NAIA Player of the Year at Northwestern (Iowa) College in 2023, has proved to be a valuable member of Nebraska's quarterback room and will compete for the backup job behind starter Dylan Raiola this fall.

Gramstad has clearly made an impact in Glenn Thomas' quarterback room.

"I told him, I said, 'Dude, I need you to come back,'" Raiola said of Gramstad this spring. "That's kind of my guy to bounce things off of. He's seen it. He's obviously been really successful at playing quarterback."

While Williams has since transferred to Florida State, it was Nebraska's postgrad camp that gave him an opportunity to show off his skill set in front of Terrance Knighton, earn a spot on the roster and play FBS football after one season at the junior college level at Iowa Central Community College.

In two seasons at Nebraska, Williams played in 16 games and recorded 18 tackles and seven sacks while being a fixture on Nebraska's third-and-long pressure packages.

Nebraska's roster is already tight on numbers, so it'll be a long shot for anyone competing at today's postgrad camp to earn a spot on the roster, even if they impress the coaches with their performance, like Gramstad, Longval, Williams and Miller did.

With the House vs. NCAA settlement stating the 105-man roster limit will be a phased-in process, players can still join a football program in 2025 and be grandfathered in.

Camp standouts

About 20 guys worked out for the Nebraska coaches on Thursday, though seven of them stayed with the coaches for extra work. Here are some who stood out:

>> Nebraska-Kearney receiver Stephen Lewis competed at the camp. The 6-2, 200-pounder from Gardendale, Alabama, caught 17 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns in 2024 while playing for head coach and former Husker running backs coach Ryan Held.

Lewis, a veteran football player, was one of the top athletes at the camp and maybe had the best day. He caught everything thrown his way.

Lewis has had quite the college football journey. After graduating high school in 2020, Lewis was headed to Liberty to play football, but the coaching staff dropped him after filling their receiving spots in the class before he arrived on campus.

Lewis pivoted to the junior college route and enrolled at Rochester Community and Technical College. That season wound up being canceled due to COVID. Lewis played at Rochester in 2021 before transferring to another JUCO for 2022, Minnesota West Community and Technical College. After one season at Minnesota West, he transferred to UNK, where he's spent the past two seasons.

Due to the NCAA's blanket waiver allowing former JUCO players an extra season, Lewis is hoping to find a new home for his final season.

>> A local product from Papillion-La Vista, cornerback Travis Hines II, camped on Thursday.

Hines was a member of the 2024 class who spent time at Omaha Central and Bellevue West before finishing his prep career at Papillion-La Vista. He landed at Iowa Western Community College, where he redshirted his true freshman season in 2024.

On Thursday, the 6-1, 175-pound Hines moved well and showed good change of direction. While a bit on the slender side, he did have the length college coaches look for in defensive backs.

>> Another local product to camp on Thursday was former Omaha Central athlete Maurice Sherrod.

Undersized but quick and fast, Sherrod, from the 2024 class, was working out as a receiver and defensive back. Sherrod didn't play football at all in 2024, but it appears he's looking for a home to play this fall.

>> One of the out-of-state athletes who showed up for the postgrad camp was Nathan Baudry, a 6-5, 250-pound defensive lineman who spent his true freshman season in 2024 at Garden City (Kan.) Community College.

Baudry is an international athlete who's from Tours, France. According to his player bio, Baudry played in nine games and made 28 tackles with 2.5 sacks.

>> The lone quarterback at the camp was Bryce Conover, who attended this same postgrad camp last year when Gramstad stole the show.

The 6-2, 215-pound Conover spent the past two seasons at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College. In 2024, he played in 10 games and completed 44% of his passes (67-of-152) with two touchdowns and five interceptions.
